Important Documents Published for the First Time
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free
(John 8:32)

By: Chorbishop Samuel Dinkha

There have lately been certain inquiries by some sincere individuals seeking documentation for what I have stated in my open letter to H.H. Mar Dinkha, IV, and further insight into the critical development of events after the unjust actions of the Assyrian Synod against H.E. Bishop Mar Bawai Soro, which led him into the bosom of Catholicism and the harbor of the Chaldean Catholic Church. In this presentation, I wish to share with the venerable reader, three brief insights, with their proper documentation, about how Mar Bawai courageously proclaimed the Truth and how the Truth ultimately set him free.

I) Proclaiming the Truth of Christ
A Statement by Bishop Mar Bawai, which caused his excommunication by the Assyrian Synod

As an articulation of the Truth he embraces and in defense of his pro-Catholic views, on 2 November 2005, Bishop Mar Bawai Soro read, signed and handed over a statement (in Assyrian Surith) concerning the pursuing of Church Unity and Full-Communion with the Catholic Church to his former Patriarch and Bishops of the Holy Synod of the Assyrian Church of the East, which was in session in Chicago, IL, from 31 October to 7 November 2005. Bishop Bawai was consequently suspended a few days later and later excommunicated, anathematized and laicized by his former Church for his honesty and courage in proclaiming his pro-Catholic faith. As if these extraordinary steps were not enough, Bishop Bawai was also dragged to courts and tens of complaints, allegations, charges and accusations were filed against him through several lawsuits at the superior courts of the States of Illinois and California.

II) Witnesses to the Messenger and to His Message
Statements by Holy See Officials

Two public statements were made by two Holy See Officials in 2006 and 2007 recognizing the pro-Catholic views and the ecumenical efforts of Bishop Mar Bawai Soro.

  1. His Excellency Bishop Brian Farrell (Vatican Information Service on 13-18 November 2006) stated that Bishop Mar Bawai suspension was largely related to his pro-Catholic position.

  2. His Eminence Cardinal Walter Kasper (Zenit interview on 22 June 2007) affirmed that Bishop Mar Bawai was one of the architects of the Catholic-Assyrian dialogue who was recognized for his significant contribution.

III) Freedom, the Result of Truth
The Dismissal of All Allegations, Accusations & Court Cases

As mentioned above, tens of complaints, allegations, charges and accusations were brought by the Assyrian Church of the East against Bishop Mar Bawai Soro in several lawsuits between 2005 and 2010. But, finally after 5 long years of litigation and legal expense, Bishop Mar Bawai was cleared and vindicated from each and every allegation or accusation. The Truth he holds so high and so sacred finally helped set him free. ALL five court-cases against Bishop Mar Bawai were fully and completely dismissed, without any harm to his record or reputation. There is absolutely no gag order of any sort remaining on any case involving Bishop Mar Bawai and there are no pending charges or cases against him any more. ALL are dismissed and are a thing of the past. Here is the list of ALL 5 court cases:
